How the pet-cost model works
Dollar defaults come from the ASPCA Cutting Pet Care Costs table labeled “2021 UPDATE” (food, routine medical, preventives, litter, toys, treats, optional insurance, license, grooming supplies, and a single $25 boarding cell to match ASPCA’s published annual total — not 365×$25). Initial one-time lines (spay/neuter, microchip, crate, etc.) and optional first-year specials (professional grooming, dental) are the same table. Every line is editable in the form sense: you can toggle insurance/specials and replace food with AAHA MER math when you enter weight, bag price, and bag kcal (dog factors from the canine column; cat factors from the feline column of the AAHA 2021 energy box).
What the lifetime range means
Lifetime = initial costs + (annual recurring × life-years low…high). Default horizons are dog 10–15 years and cat 12–18 years — user-overridable bands that span typical ownership windows and sit near Synchrony’s surveyed expected lifespans (~12.5 dog / ~14.7 cat) and Synchrony’s 15-year Lifetime of Care study window. When food is MER-computed, AAHA factor bands can widen the annual food line, which widens lifetime further.
Explicit limits and exclusions
- ASPCA figures are national 2021 UPDATE estimates — not quotes for your ZIP code.
- Emergency surgery, chronic disease care, and multi-day boarding are excluded unless you add them.
- No inflation schedule; Synchrony’s wider published lifetime ranges are external context only.
- Insurance education belongs on pet insurance cost (NAPHIA) — the ASPCA insurance cell is optional and crude.
When to get professional advice
Budgeting for a pet with known medical needs, breeding plans, or specialty diets requires a veterinarian (and sometimes a financial planner) — not this spreadsheet-style estimate. Treat outputs as order-of-magnitude planning math on cited public tables.
Pet cost FAQ
